I know these fares. They are market specific and likely there to stay. I would also say this is a different situation. The ex-MXP P-Class fares are very restrictive (no stops - no changes) but very good value. They are there to provide some competition for the Skyteam flights which are leaving from this hub.
I have a colleague who is 6'8 and is taking his girlfriend to LAS. There is a WK flight (with LX code) which goes non-stop ZRH-LAS. Total J-Class was probably in excess of USD 4,000 for ZRH-LAS. However - for MXP-ZRH-LAS - fare dropped to around $1,800. He's ready to do the drive/train/flight to MXP on this just so he can get business. (Girlfriend does not care so much). My wife is now somewhat with me on all these crazy routings.
The main thing with the PE fares was that for a long list of routings - the O-Class was cheaper than B-Class with the same restrictions. Made no sense.
