I transferred over from the old UA (pre CO merger) and they were pretty good about getting 1Ks (Exec PLT) on other flights and getting you in the upgrade queue. It was a bit of a rude awakening on AA that if you change flights (your fault or otherwise), they clear the upgrades, then clear the standbys. Meaning, no chance of an upgrade. My experience, not sure how it's supposed to work.
