I travel this route often. I usually purchase the SFO-JFK portion and use miles for First on the JFK-SFO portion. I always find a First seat available a day or two before departure so you might use this strategy.

I don't think that Plat members have any extended award availability although, one time I wanted to get home and didn't see an award seat. I called, and the agent was able to get me out the same day. Don't know why I couldn't see that online, but it worked for me.

Don't hold your breathe for business class to open up. Rarely see it.
So it actually looks like you do get access to extra award seats when you call in as a Platinum.

Expanded Award seating availability
As an Executive Platinum member, you have exclusive access to additional MileSAAver award seating availability on American Airlines and American Eagle flights for you and one companion. While this is not a guarantee of available seating, it does provide more flexibility when you are traveling on a MileSAAver award. Please note that this option is only available by calling the Executive Platinum service desk.
I do fly that route a lot and have a bunch of AA miles... I will contemplate whether it is worth buying the Platinum status so I can use them...
