Sorry, I value my equipment enough to not check them. It would be incredibly poor show for me to arrive at a client site with the lame excuse that the baggage gorillas broke my checked equipment, and would need to come back several weeks later to do my work. Time is money, and wasted time replacing stuff not only affects me, but my clients as well. Obviously you don't value your stuff as much as I do with mine, perhaps if the photography was not considered a hobby, you'd think differently. My equipment is my livelihood. And its not like I can find a local store to replace it. Some of it is imported, some of it requires certification/calibration.
The actions of the TSA are not the airline's problem, neither is the thief who steals a fancy case from the baggage claim at an international destination (I see this happen more than you care to think). It is my stuff, and my responsibility to keep it safe with me. I certainly am not alone with this thinking.
Disappointing to see AC YYZ staff become the carryon baggage dragons measuring baggage weight as well.
