I will not even direct this comment toward the carry on weight issue. I really recommend that your wife does NOT check in her body and glass. That really is foolish. You should never check in anything of value, that is unless you don't care if it gets broken or goes missing. AC themselves say that photography equipment should be in your carry on. I don't know what else you would be carrying on that is more valuable and important than your 12k of gear. Yes, protective cases make them almost bulletproof but they're just as easy to steal or go missing.
