How are you attempting to upgrade?

You can upgrade by buying an upgrade at checkin on the individual sector to F (no extra tier points will accrue). You may have to check in the AA forum if this will be possible on the transcon flights. I don't know the cost. It will be subject to availability.

Being issued on US ticket paper, or under a US flight prefix, might complicate matters. (If you are a US Dividend Miles member, it may well be you can upgrade under the US scheme.)

If you want to upgrade using BA Avios then the ticket needs to be issued by a BA office onto BA ticket paper. Otherwise BA simply don't have any control over the sector.

Alternatively, you could buy a through A fare; or just in one direction. AL28SALE is not much more than IL28SALE. But it would be a shame to buy one of those without a TATL sector in F.
Thanks I was unsure if it was possible to upgrade or not as it is tempting to try first on the JFK-LAX sector. However considering your info I will go with the AA flights out I/I/P and the US flights back which will give me the flat bed on the TA overnight return.

Being new to all of this what I find interesting is that I can ticket this on US all on AA metal for $1697 but the same flights on AA are €2250 when priced either through AA.com or on the ITA matrix. I hope its not a glitch that only becomes an issue when you get to the payment stage.
