Coming from DD-WRT, I cheated by choosing a router (TL-MR3020 in this case) for which people are building complete packages with the GUI integrated Fortunately, I was able to figure out how to configure the things I cared about pretty quickly such as an OpenVPN client.

Since then, I bought a Xiaomi Mi Mini WiFi AC1200 class router (a little large to be a true travel router) for $25 from China and installed OpenWRT on it.
