I started out using a clear plastic Camelbak with straw that I like just fine until noticed gunk growing on the underside of the silicone air valve. I pulled it out to clean it better then could not get it back it, rendering it non-leakproof.
My second Camelbak was in stainless steel because I thought it wouldn't get scratched as easily and would stay cleaner on the inside. It was successful on both counts but I dropped it on pavement once which left a small dent on the bottom edge. It's still functional but doesn't stand up well if it's on the empty side.
Another disadvantage of the Camelbaks is sometimes the inside straw comes loose but I do like the fact that the squishy drinking end of the straw is protected by the loop when not in use. Also no head tilting to drink to the bottom!
Now I've been rotating through a 3 pack of plastic Contigo bottles from Costco. The only difficult part to clean is the spring release opening where the water comes out. I like to put real lemon/lime juice in my water and the pulp gets stuck in there so I use a small cleaning brush that resembles a mascara wand.
FWIW these are all bottles that I purchased. I get tons of promotional bottles from conventions, golf tournaments, etc. and most are junk! They leak or break or don't have a loop to attach. That's where the real waste is.
