There is no true competitor to AC that has its network/reach and also even within Canada, WS can't even compete with AC schedule wise.

They offer a different service, service schedule, etc which I agree with.
You choose not to fly WJ because you don't like their product however they are more lenient on the carryon weight. So you obviously think AC has a better value proposition overall so if that is important to you, then following their carryon rules shouldn't be a big deal, its part of getting everything else you like.
I don't believe that their is no competition on many major routes. It depends on what you are willing to accept. The only year round scheduled flight to FRA from YYC is with AC, however I could fly BA to LHR and then onwards. I could also fly to the center of the universe and take LH. I could go to any hub and pick up a multitude of airlines. It may take me longer but they do provide me with an alternative. If I want the direct route, I follow the rules that they post. Unfortunately their plane, their rules.
