Or to put it another way. If the Tokyo Round Trip Ticket is like what Suica+N'EX used to be, what you get when you pay 4000 yen on arrival in NRT is a ticket for N'EX to travel into Tokyo and a voucher for the return journey. You don't have to decide which N'EX to take for your travel back to the airport until later. When you do you will have to go to a JR station to exchange the voucher for a ticket with a reserved seat.
