Sorry for the naive question but Im completely new to the Amtrak program. I havent even got my membership pack yet. What is the space available upgrade program? Can it be used for Metroliners and Acela? Thanks.</font>
Space available upgrades are available to Select members (5000 rail points in a year) and for purchase with Guest Rewards points. You get 5 upgrades for 10,000 points. They are valid on Metroliner and Acela for a one-class upgrade within one hour of train departure if a seat is available.
Come to think of it, they could be used on any train with a Business Class product, such as the Cascades and California trains, Palmetto, Carolinian, Michigan services, etc. The restrictions only say it is not valid for sleeper accomodations.
