The 757-200 has a very high Cost per Available Seat Mile compared to the 737-900 and 737-900ER. Also, the 757s have to use Code D (or larger) gates, whereas the A320 and 737 can use Code C gates, which are a lot less expensive to lease from airports.
I can't believe we're still lamenting the loss of the 752s. They're fun planes to fly, but when Fedex is looking to buy a slew of P&W powered ones, and 752s with winglets aren't certified for cargo use, where else are they going to look...
Plus, a 739 has as many seats as a PMUA 752 and can fly probably 95% of the routes that they currently fly. If it saves UA $2mn a year to replace a 752 with a 739, I don't think UA is really losing anything here.
