Stupid Alaska, really? The four hour rule is pretty common, airlines are not baggage storage facilities, I wouldn't want to check my bag too early as that is a very good way for the bag to get missed and left behind. The AS counter at ORD has limited hours (Daily: 4:00 am - 9:00 am; 11:30 am - 7:00 pm) so that plays into it as well. In my experience using the self tag kiosk is about as quick as it gets and generally does not require any wait in lines.
