Supposedly it's gotten better, but frankly if you're able to get it done then I'd still do it. It's a pretty inexpensive peace of mind. Do allow yourself a bit of extra time though, last time I was checking in at JNB, the lines for luggage wrapping were as long as the actual check in lines themselves.
