Never had a problem. Even carried large art pieces on board. As long as they fit, usually OK.

As always, be friendly, smile, greet the agent at the gate/plane, etc. You can ask the FA for help to store it if necessary, some flights still have a closet that will fit the item. If you pack it in a protective case/tube it is pretty easy to fit into a full bin alongside/over/around the bags.
