You said they "allowed you to gift" membership. Was the ability to gift a specifically defined benefit or just something that customer service allowed? If it was specifically written into the benefits you have a valid complaint and I would pursue with UA. If it was just something that was "allowed" as a courtesy, then I think you're out of luck.
That was my thought. It sounds like it was more of an individual accommodation than a program benefit. I would follow up in any case but be prepared to be disappointed.
