Ability to cancel award point stays

This weekend I want to book two nights to use my points on. I am not sure yet whether or not I will need the second night. If I book now will I be able to cancel the second night reservation and get those points back if I decide I do not need the room. How much advance notice do I need to give to cancel the reservation and get the points back? I have gold status with marriott at the moment.
