Long time reader first time poster here. Just wanted start off by saying thanks to all the members for contributing to this thread and making it such a useful and friendly community for the rest of us.

I've recently just started collecting Avios points using the BA Amex and was wondering what's the best way to spend them (ideally for upgrade) to get the best value.

I'd like to be able to travel from London to Taipei on an annual basis. I understand there isn't a direct flight so the best option I have is to upgrade on the longer haul flight from LHR to HKG.

Since I assume it is cheaper to get return tickets rather than one-way, and the upgrade path of Prem Econ to Business seems to be the best bang for buck, would it be most wise just to book return tickets of Prem Econ and upgrade them to Business? I'd have to separately book return tickets from HKG to TPE of course but that's such a short journey I'm not too worried about.

With the recent change since Apr I'm not sure if this is the best option and if it was the best option to begin with. The sticky guide is very informative but I can't seem to figure out what would be the optimal choice for myself.
