I use Whatsapp too, but it doesn't receive SMS for my phone numbers. Google Voice (not available in most markets) got me around that issue regardless of where in the world I find myself. Even as I receive more Whatsapp, iMessage, Skype and other specific app messages than SMS, SMS still seems to be a big part of my travel picture when outside of the U.S.
