No really, this is nothing new; however, I have found if, as a customer, I am nicer than the staff in N. America, it raises their service to that of Asia. Request the area of the hotel you want to be in before check-in, arrive, do a big smile, always thank you, provide more IDs than asked for, get my key, B-fast cert, bye.
In the morning, build rapport with the B-fast staff, then tip 'em a few bucks, works wonders.
(I know.....no tipping in Japan, that's heaven).
