A bit off topic, but flights are commonly oversold, with airlines anticipating there will be a certain number of no-shows, missed connections, etc. Even if the flight is oversold, often times there are enough seats to accommodate passengers. But of course if there are fewer missed connections or no-shows than anticipated, then airlines will be looking for volunteers. That often isn't known though until <1 hour before departure. Of course there are always exceptions...
