Asia vs. North America, different standard of customer service?

I first stayed at a Sheraton in Canada a few years back. Niagara Falls the one overlooking the falls. After that stay I remember vowing never to return to a Sheraton (didn't know about spg then), and I didn't until recently after signing up with SPG. The service was very unattentive, and when they made a mistake they didn't own up to it and even tried blaming me for it and threatening me over it (parking issue). It was such a miniscule and minor issue that I was baffled at their response and received much better service at many lower end hotels in the past.

I stayed at many other hotels in N America since then and although I've had really good experiences they never equate to the level of service I've gotten in Asia, specifically the south east asian market.

The club lounges offer more, the staff go out of their way to help you out, they make you feel much more welcome and generally make it seem that it's their pleasure to help you out. Especially considering I'm a younger guy and dress down while at the hotel.

Just wondering what other people have to say about this and whether they've noticed something similar of it's just my own limited experiences skewing my perception.
