Those would be the automated passport machines. As long as you don't get a big X then you basically just get a receipt for the agent to look over.

Surprised that the line was so long, the one time I went through immigration in DEN we were through in like 10 minutes though that was arriving on Icelandair. If you know what you're doing though the automatic passport machines can really speed things up - I arrived into JFK from Israel last month and while the hall was packed I jogged over to the machines to get in front of the people that didn't know what they were doing or where they were going and got through it all in about 10 or 15 minutes, either way I beat my bag to the carousel and had to wait on it.
