I don't consider "driving" as mass transit. They are individuals driving. Mass transit means you don't have control over the vehicle (whether it be boat, train, plane).
I presume more people fly on planes than take the train.
And the other question is whether trains have rigid safety standards here in the US. Someone in the UK said America's train control system is "primitive". And the question is why the government doesn't require actual safety standards here on the train system (my guess is cause Amtrak is private/public).
America is unwilling, for whatever reason, to invest in more advanced technology to protect trains - and passengers.
If the Philadelphia accident was caused by excessive speed then it might well have been prevented had modern train protection systems been installed - either the driver would have been warned to slow down or the train would have braked automatically.
