Spoke to the call centre (India) but they would not budge on extending the validity. They weren't even apologetic about the mistake which bugged me a bit.
Have wrote down my request clearly and succinctly in an email to BA. Will see where this gets me.

So make sure the second Amex you have is the BA Amex too!
They were both BA Amex cards, in fact they were both paired to the two companion vouchers I used.
