I think that's flwed logic as it it would not be turning 168 to 152 but rather something like 160 to 152 given the middle seat is already free for CE. Plus if my memory serves me correctly fro mcollege many moons ago you have a better chance of reducing the economic surplus by having different strata of willing to pay customers. It is not about averages but rather maximizing the demand at each price (and service) point.
Perhaps, but by doing that you kill the flexibility of the fleet - UK domestics are single class. This means you can easily substitute aircraft at short notice, and when timetabling the aircraft you have one fewer constraint to work with, leading to more efficient use of aircraft.
