Ok sorted - added him as a 'Family & Friend' - only required name, email and DOB. The email wasn't verified for him to be added so you could even use a fake one if you really needed to.

The limitation is that you can only have a set number of Friends and can't rotate them regularly, but I'm not planning on spending lots of my Avios on friends so this kind of one-off purchase is fine.
