After reviewing my records for the past two years, it's clear that I'm running bills of about $6000 year to use my mobile phone overseas. My American carrier is AT&T running an iphone 6. My international travel is about 12 weeks/year in Europe, Asia, India and Australia, mostly.

The problem with country-specific prepaid SIMs is that the validity/funds may expire before you get back to the country. If you are willing to deal with the hassle of buying them again or reloading them periodically to deal with expiration issues or avoid expiration issues, then it can work -- at least it works for some pretty well in conjunction with some US VOIP/SIP services or something like that.
I've yet to find a European plan service that could save me money for my distributed time amongst the U.S., Europe and India -- relative to what I get out of the method mentioned in my prior paragraph.
