Many of us want to confirm the upgrade at time of ticketing, not on the day of departure, if we're using miles or instruments--especially if higher fare classes are required.

Also, I suspect that if you upgrade with VS miles, you then must credit the flight to VS rather than DL, which again would not be appealing to many of us who want the MQMs.
