I wouldn't overthink upgrades - its probably random. Tomorrow is my birthday, I'm on a fully flex ticket from ALG to LGW and I've no special meal. If for operational reasons BA need upgrades I'm probably no more likely than anyone else to receive it, if they don't need to upgrade then I'll be perfectly happy in my natural territory on the back row with the other naughty kids
