I know a couple of people who were upgraded at OLCI from WTP to CW (flying LHR to JFK) but their colleague on a separate PNR was not.

They checked in together and asked if he could be upgraded to the same cabin as the colleagues - and the agent agreed.

Probably (definitely!) not a rule of thumb....but always worth having an ask!
