I have done this several times, never had an issue. I sleep on top of whatever I check, and I never carry more than one bag n, so i don't have too much to keep up with. With busy airports, like my home airport of ATL, there are a number of security officers roaming around, plenty of night time workers, and tons of travelers who are also asleep.
