flew ET last year with a 14 hour connection (no shorter connection available). on arrival at ADD ~7am, i headed to the transfer desk where there was a massive lineup for Y pax (apparently a bunch of ET flights arrive in ADD around that hour) but luckily the J line was only 4-5 people long. many Y pax tried to sneak into the J line but were thankfully turned away. told the agent about my transfer, gave them my passport and itinerary and the agent seemed to know the drill. she wrote some things on carbon copy paper and then gave me one of the slips that would allow for the free hotel. as well, she gave me a yellow card to surrender at immigration that "paid" for the visa.
at immigration, the line was insanely long but once again there was a line for premium passengers and it was virtually empty. the immigration officer kept the yellow card and the "visa" turned out to be a regular stamp in my passport. after reclaiming my bag, there was a bunch of people gathered around waiting to be transported to their hotels. we then went out to the parking lot where there were people checking the carbon copy slips and directing them to a bus/van that went to their respective hotels. people in Y were sent to no name hotels while i was sent to the hilton (don't expect much). upon checkin, i was (unexpectedly) given vouchers for breakfast, lunch and dinner (all were buffets).
overall, it was a somewhat chaotic experience and there was some confusion as to where to go (just ask around) but being in J made it ok, especially when it's on ET's dime. can't comment on what the transfer is like in Y. also, be careful because ET could refuse the paid stopover if there was a shorter connection available that is <8 hours and you purposely chose the longer one.
