Both Takayama and Kanazawa could have heavy snow, with more snow in Kanazawa than in Takayama. The trains run anyway, but when I took some students on a January Term trip that included Takayama, the students who had thought that the only footwear they needed was sandals plus wool socks had an unpleasant surprise.

The trees in Kenrokuen in Kanazawa have "crutches" to prevent the branches from collapsing under the weight of the snow.
