Winter Chugoku-Chubu Itinerary Advice/Critique

I'd like to hear any potential issues/problems with my proposed schedule. On another thread, I stated that I'll be in Japan for about 3 weeks from Dec to Jan. About half of my trip has been planned (Dec18-27: Tokyo and Kyushu, Jan 8-10: Tokyo) and I'm in the process of firming up the other half. Tentative schedule for the other half:

Dec. 27: Leave Yufuin for Hiroshima

Dec 27-30: Hiroshima/Miyajima

Dec 30: Travel to Takayama

Dec 30-Jan 2: Takayama/Shirakawa

Jan 2: Travel to Kanazawa

Jan 2-5: Kanazawa

Jan 5: Travel to Nagano

Jan 5-8: Nagano/Matsumoto

Jan 8: Travel to Tokyo

I'll be using a JR pass on this trip and will be mainly traveling in the mornings so that I can arrive sometime in the afternoon at my destinations. Does this seemed too packed? Are there any areas where I should cut or add a day? A couple of friends have recommended going to Niigata but I'm not sure if that is feasible. In regards to Takayama and Kanazawa, I've heard a couple of travelers say that both cities are quite similar in terms of sights and to pick only one.

As for things to do in each destination, I have a general sense of places/activities in mind but not something like a strict schedule. On a previous trip to Japan, in Kansai, I set a strict and ambiguous itinerary. While many places were visited, I feel I didn't get to soak in as much as I had wanted. I'm aiming for a somewhat relaxed pace.

Note to mods: Please free to move this to my previous thread, if deemed appropriate.
