HI my son aged 18 is flying

Lond Heathrow to Johannesburg and then connecting to Huidspruit.
Flying Virgin arrives 9.05am in JBurg then SAA JBurg (dep 12.15) to Hoedspruit (arr 13.20)

Coming back reversed
SAA Hoedspruit 12 noon to JBurg (13.00)
JBurg 20.10 to LHR

This his first flight with a connection on his own, and especially given some of the comments on this forum I am being a scared mum thinking of all the things that can go wrong.

Questions:
Will he need to collect his bags and recheck in at JBurg on way out and on way back to UK?
Is it worth shrink wrapping bags? If so, if we do this on way out at London will it need to be opened and redone at JBurg?
What are instructions on connecting. Does he need to go landside at JBurg, to connect to domestic flights?
Coming back, will there be shrink wrap facilities in Hoedspruit? If not how does he protect luggage - won't contain valuable, but presumably will have some gifts.
He has a long stop over at JBurg on way home. Is there a lounge, or other good safe aread to sit - perhaps with wifi? He is flying economy so nothing automatic, but could pay.
