Those sizes of vehicles may well be FWD, not AWD, at LAS. At Denver or Reno with the skier traffic AWD is more likely. Cars get moved between locations all the time, though.
At car retrieval one can look for badges, an AWD select button or knob, or crawl on hands and knees and look for rear half-shafts.

Any thoughts on whether the midsize SUV or the compact is more likely to have AWD? There are only two of us so we can do either, though I was leaning towards the larger size, all else being equal.
Also, am I right in thinking that the model they follow is to let you walk through the lot and pick up the vehicle you want (and would that still be the case even if it's a one way rental, or would they already have a specific vehicle in mind)? If so, would we be better picking up the vehicle on arrival @9.30pm (midweek) or would mid-morning the following day probably result in a better selection? We'll just stay somewhere close by, and saving on parking fees would negate the cost of a taxi there and back if we don't pick the car up until the following day, so I'm starting to think a morning pickup might be better. Plus it means I can drink on the plane!
