OP's entire complaint was that it was not properly addressed. Proper would have been "You're right, we're giving you the credit you earned." This was "We're making an exception and donating you credit to be nice."

As OP mentioned, the difference is what happens next time. The former response would lead to credit, the latter might well not, and therefore it's better to book the apparently-overlapping night at another chain to ensure credit.
