At least with US credit cards, many will reimburse things like hotel rooms, ground transport and food, if you have a delay over a certain length. I've seen a number of cards that will reimburse up to $500 for delays over 12 hours, but some cards will reimburse for delays as little as 3 hours.
If your card happens to have that coverage, it would give you more peace of mind about the short evening connection.
No need. OP is flying xEU. Thus, he is covered by EC 261/2004. Regardless of the reason for a misconnect, AA will have a duty of care and will provide him with a hotel + food.
Needless to say, the insurance may be nice as it gives you the choice, but at JFK it won't be a big deal.
