I'm not sure there _is_ a later JFK-MCO nonstop on AA after that one (doesn't look like it).
If I were you, I'd stick with these flights, and if something goes wrong, AA will get you to MCO, although you might end up having to route through another location.

Avoid checking bags if at all possible. AA has a fairly liberal cabin baggage policy, and this may help you make your connection (baggage delivery at JFK is not speedy).
I did think about this, but this is a 14-day holiday (should've mentioned that!) and need the extra space of cabin baggage.
