Here's one more data point: Ticket purchased in March for June travel ANC-PDX, both segments booked in H class. The return had U space available at booking and received an Instant Upgrade.
I had an ExpertFlyer alert set for the 6/25 ANC-PDX segment and a notification was sent this week showing one U space opened ... but the Instant Upgrade didn't process.
Once I called in, the agent saw the situation and quickly moved me into F.
