Gate checked meaning to the cargo and retrieved at the baggage carousel, no, it won't be gate checked.
The bag will most likely be "valet" checked i.e. you retrieve it as you deplane the CRJ900 and before going in the terminal.
If you want to make sure they won't make you valet check it, you are better off with a non-wheeled bag, such as a backpack or duffel.
