Strip search rights?

I've been reading so many people's horror stories at the border and the one that keeps coming up as being very disturbing is strip searches without a reason.
I know our rights are diminished at the border but with body scanners available is there really a reason to subject human beings to this humiliating practice?
As a woman and a law abiding citizen, what happens if someone refuses to submit to a strip search crossing in to the US? Surely they can't do this against your will? There's too much abuse of authority and power to allow that practice.
I bet it's performed more on innocents than the guilty. It's not only humiliating for women but men too

So what happens if anyone refuses?
