On EK, they will often have all classes closed for busy flights which is a PITA as you cannot waitlist. Y1 will then appear and disappear depending on load and here things likes Expertflyer alerts are fantastic to go and grab the released seat as soon as it becomes available

I didn't think you could wait list on BA, with some rare exceptions where it suits BA to do so.
