I didn't enter nor need VISA as Canadian ($60 USD fee) during my last transfer YYZ-IST-ICN (INTL-to-INTL)

thanks for the reply. i'll check out that link. i'm american and will be traveling ORD-IST-FCO and then reverse for return trip.
