Yup as I mentioned before US had the same issue when it became T-24. First-come, first-serve with the F seats. If a F seat is available at the time of check-in you can choose the seat on the seat map and claim it.
So at least AS can rest in the fact that they're definitely not the only airline to deal with this. I know that at some point, maybe years from now, it will get fixed, but in the meantime, once you know the way this upgrade game works, it's kinda "fun" to play
