As for 'trouble_', my spendings (in CHF) per earned 10k status miles (exec bonus included) have been in the same ballpark over the past 4 years:
Y 2012: 1686 CHF
Y 2013: 1716 CHF
Y 2014: 2740 CHF
Y 2015: 1720 CHF
(all flights ex-GVA, 35-50 segments per year, 90% LX and LH flights, 4-6 transcont. RTs in 'discounted' C (half in P, half in Z), intra-EU flights all in 'cheap' Y)

I am also based in GVA..
The transcont to the US I try to do them from BRU !!
You do GVA BRU in the morning and then BRU to ZHR ...
So no need to stay overnight in BRU.
As I mentionned you pay in A-Class BRU - SFO 4000 euros.....
and you ad GVA BRU in cheap eco....
As for the intra Europe, cheap Y class will get you nothing..... this you already know.
If you do 3-4 rt trip to the US you get your 100k super fast for a cheap price from BRU....
