If I'd only take the UG as a couple, I'd leave it as it was.
Now, with UA, I am traveling with a 5 year old and my husband. We are flying DTW-ORD-MCO. I know my possibilities through ORD are always low, but if I want to chance it and take the UG if available on any of our flights, do I need to do something? We all 3 have the same confirmation number. I'm the only Premier among us. While I'd love for my son to sit up front with me for the short flight from ORD-MCO or return, I'm being honest and saying that I have no problem leaving the boys in back.
My hubby hasn't flown with me since the merger, and the time I flew with my son, I was a Plat & we both got upgrades days ahead of the flight. I've read the website but admit, I'm confused. Do I need to notify someone to separate the confirmation numbers? Does that affect my companion's ability to check his luggage for free? Or do I leave it all alone and IF a seat opens in 1st, I'll be in the same situation as I would be traveling alone?
The return flights seem much more possible for upgrades than our 1st flights on Friday do. I've even considered upgrading myself on the way home with miles, but I don't want to affect their seating or ability to check bags free. My son is listed as my companion and got economy plus seating with me. I paid for my husband to sit in Economy Plus so we could all sit together.
We only have 3 bags to check so that's my 2 and my son's 1 of 2 possible as my companion. The way it reads I'm understanding that both my companion and I get to check 2 free bags each. I'm assuming my hubby would be asked to pay if he had more luggage, as he's not premiere or companion.
When you travel solo, as I do, it's easy to figure out the best ways to go. This family vacation stuff definitely confuses me. I asked UA's Gold Premiere Line and was given 2 different answers on 2 different dates. As our trip approaches this week, I'm hoping that someone here can help me out.
Most important is the possible upgrade. If I want the BEST chance at an UG, do I have to separate the confirmation numbers or just leave it as is and I'll still be treated as a possible UG?
Thanks in advance!
Suggest you take a look at this thread (read the wiki at the top). It's a very complicated subject. The highlight is if you want the best chance at upgrade, you'll need to split the reservation. In your case, call UA and have them put your husband on a separate PNR (so you+son on one, and your husband on another). This will maximize your shot at upgrades (because if only 2 seats open for upgrade, you'll clear this way) while not losing your son's checked bag for free. Make sure you don't auto check in for the return, or you'll have the same problem. For both flights, wait as long as possible for an upgrade to clear before checking in, but that's unlikely with 3 PAX.
