When I missed my flight leaving the YVR Do, the agent simply gave me another BP for the first flight out the following day, no fee.

When I missed my flight more recently, I had to pay the fare difference, and a change fee. (note: I did this from the hotel room, not at the airport).

And then I read on FT that if you miss your flight, that you technically forfeit the flight.

So what is it then?
