Rapidair flights are priced differently at different times of day, i.e. popular times cost more. It would not be in AC's interest if you could buy a cheap fare at a time that you had no intention of flying in order to do a SDC to a more expensive/popular time. Also, there could still be last minute sales of later flights.
Standing by for an earlier flight costs AC nothing. Your original seat may even get sold again, benefitting AC.
The cost of any given Rapidair segment also seems to vary depending on whether there is a Porter flight leaving at a similar time...
